This week, the staff of Young Idea published the 71st edition of Lake Forest High School’s art and literary magazine. Young Idea editors meet once a week as a club to discuss and critique student writing throughout the year for the ultimate publication of their magazine. The staff then matches student artwork with the chosen pieces to fully develop the artistic merit and overall aesthetic of the magazine.
Much of the literary content is of the fiction variety. The magazine includes poems, short stories, and artwork; impressively, the ideas are organically produced by the young authors of Lake Forest High School. According to Clara Finley’s editors note inside the opening cover of the magazine, “The contents of this magazine will expose you to your friends’ secret musings, scribbled into the margins of their notebooks, the rhymes crafted at late hours after hours of studying math, the writing workshops about which you have overheard peer conferences. The contents of this magazine will expose you to the images that your friends envision and recreate with paint and brushes, the pictures created across many days of 4th period art classes, the colored marks gazed at in the hallway, complimented during passing periods.”
Young Idea is sponsored by faculty advisors Dr. Mara Dukats and Mr. Jimmy Juliano. The editors and critique staff includes Katie Arch, Teresa Fawcett, Clara Finley, James Gretz, Rebecca Guo, Kristina Honour, Dominic LeRose, Stephanie Raupp, and Jessica Vlies. The group also works with Mr. Corey Holmer and Ms. Carolyn Bielski. Students can see Dr. Dukats or Mr. Juliano if they’d like to purchase a copy, which are $32, and checks can be made out to Lake Forest High School.
